Wallpaper Mural Installation Guide
If the wall has been freshly painted, you will need to wait up to 30 days before installing to allow the paint to outgas and to properly dry. Also ensure the paint has been primed properly and is not wash and wear or Teflon paint as the wallpaper may not adhere to the paint.
Tools Required:
- Fine Sandpaper
- Cloth/Rag
- Tape Measure
- Ladder/Step Ladder
- Applicator Squeegee
- Stanley Knife
Surface Preparation
Inspect the walls for any defects such as bumps or peeling paint and cracks and repair as required to ensure a clean and smooth surface for the install. Remove any obstacles that may be in the way such as lights, power points (Remove the cover and/or unscrew the block), light switches (Remove the cover and/or unscrew the block) and picture hooks.
Use a slightly damp cloth or sponge to clean the wall surface of all the dust and allow it to completely dry before starting.
The wallpaper can be repositioned multiple times however once the adhesive collects too much dust, dirt or fibres it will become less effective in sticking properly to the surface.
It may also be helpful to have two people to install it.
Wallpaper mural installation steps
Step 1:
Prepare the rolls of wallpaper for the installation. Starting from the left hand side of the wall with the wallpaper labelled as No.1 and then sequentially with the rest. Unroll all the drops to ensure there is no confusion when installing.
Step 2:
Starting with drop 1, peel about 100mm-150mm of the backing liner and crease the back of the backing liner.
Line up the left edge with the vertical line of your wall and Line up the top edge with your ceiling, allowing for the additional 20mm bleed along the top, which can be trimmed off at the end of the installation, and lightly stick the exposed section of the wallpaper to the wall. Allow the rest of the drop to unravel, ensuring it is square to the wall before continuing with the rest of the panel.
Take your time in lining up the first panel as it will make the rest of the installation much easier.
Step 3:
Once you are happy with the positioning of the panel, apply the exposed section securely to the wall using the squeegee.
Slowly and evenly pull down the backing sheet in small sections, approx. 150mm – 300mm at a time. Working in a left to right motion with your squeegee, apply the wallpaper with a firm pressure to the wall. As you work down the wall, continue to keep peeling the backing sheet to expose the adhesive and using the same left to right motion with the squeegee.
As you are applying the wallpaper, you may want to periodically check to ensure the panel is still going straight.
After the install of the first panel, check to see if there are any wrinkles or bubbles in your print, try and squeegee it out, if needed you can carefully peel the wallpaper back and reapply the affected area. You may want to shine a torch on the surface to locate any hiding bubbles/wrinkles.
Step 4:
Before applying the next panel, mark a 10mm overlap line. All vertical panels have a 10mm overlap. Using a tape measure, measure 10mm in from the right-hand edge of the wallpaper and place a small piece of masking tape. We recommend doing 2-3 pieces of masking tape to assist in keeping the panel straight.
The printed image should line up perfectly, the straightness is determined by the first panel.
Step 5:
Once you have the next print lined up, repeat steps 2-4 until all panels have been applied to the wall.
Step 6:
Once all the panels have been applied to the wall, use a sharp blade/knife to remove the excess print on the top and bottom or sides of the wall.
If you are unsure about trimming a straight line, try using a long edge ruler.
Trimming around light switch places and power points:
- Remove the cover (Should have been done prior to install)
- Squeegee the wallpaper film up to the top edge of the of the power point
- Make an incision using a sharp blade into the centre of the power point
- Carefully extend the incision to the inside edge of every corner
- Using gentle pressure, squeegee the wallpaper around the power point working from top down, being careful not to crease the vinyl
- Continue applying the panel, once finished carefully trim around all four edges
- Alternatively, the entire power point can be unscrewed and pulled out to make it easier to tuck the vinyl behind the block
- Reposition the power point and put the screws back in
- Place the cover back onto the power point
Bubbles:
If bubbles re-appear over the next day or two, pressing and lightly rubbing can remove it. This can happen occasionally if oil, dirt, or dust is trapped on your surface. Using a sewing pin to pop the bubble, and then smoothing it out with your fing3ers in a circular motion can also work. Most cases of bubbles are because the wall was painted within the last 30 days or cleaning chemicals were used propr. In these cases, if you can lift the material up to outgas and release that pocket then re-apply it most likely will not come back.
Cleaning:
To clean the wallpaper, use a warm damp rag to clear the dust. Avoid using any chemicals as it may damage the print.
